First time on this spot, went to see how it works. Also first time getting out over shorebreak, fucking heavy and not enough wind, was mostly in the water. Came back in after an hour with not much success, but very tired. Tomorrow is another day.

Low wind, a ton of chop, more or less a tacking practice than anything else. Oh well ...

Wow, how lucky I am!
I'm spending the winter on Lanzarote, meaning all my kit is there. However, we are back in Ljubljana for the holidays. Yesterday, as we were walking down the beautiful old center of Ljubljana, I noticed the high-altitude clouds zooming by unusually fast, from a southwesterly direction. Hmm, I thought, this usually means good conditions down in Istria, but got distracted with ordering mulled wine.
Then it was already past 8 pm, getting ready for the New Years Eve celebration. I'm not sure entirely why, but I opened up Windguru for my favorite wave spot in the region. Oh crap, look at that forecast and I don't have any kit at home. :(
Fuck it, let's do this. Several hours of SMSing and calling friends I managed to get an impromptu kit together and a good wave board. At least in theory. Just in time to pop that champagne bottle.
After what was not enough sleep by any stretch, the alarm went off at 6:00. I picked up Marko at his place, then a couple of sails and my board for the day from his workshop and off we went.
Just as we arrived on the spot, the conditions started improving. I rigged up and jumped in the water. And got a huge smile on my face immediately! The kit is working perfectly! Assembled from bits and pieces from three people, but just perfect for the conditions.
The waves just kept getting better and better, higher and higher, with the strong side-shore wind. Since it was the 1st of January, there were no crowds. Just a selection of top mates that I enjoy sailing with the most. What a day! And what a way to start off the year 2018!

Morning session in Famara with Špela and Toni

Small Casa Chino
When I'm swamped with work I really like to go here since it's a short drive and I can park right on the beach. Waves weren't any good today though :)
Nevertheless, 100th session this year! And it's only May! Hooraay!

Tiny Jameos, loads of fun
It was tiny indeed but I sailed fantastic! Went upwind like a train and finally did a cutback as it should be -> the whole secret is just going really vertically back into the peak, the body then knows what to do. All about hitting the critical section, the board will go back around, that's all!
Also, went back from K4 15cm to Flikka 14cm fins. I really don't notice the difference at all.

Usual morning Jameos
Another one of those morning sessions at Jameos when the wind is good for about an hour or so and then it dies just when everybody else shows up on the beach. So happy I don't have problems getting up early :)

Back to old habits :(
Lately I'm mostly focusing on better timing and I'm starting to go back to my old habit of severely opening up the sail in the bottom turn. Argh, so hard to ditch this one!

New favorite NE spot?
I saw Tim sailing El Cartel when I was driving up. I've heard so many good stories about this break that I decided to join him.
And boy did I enjoy it! This really is a fantastic wave. Especially in NE directions when Jameos is kind of onshore, this is perfect sideshore with a steep wall to carve against!
Do I have a new favorite sport for NE wind?

Best Charcos ever!
Wow! Charos is definitely not the best wave venue in the World, but today it worked wonders! Overhead waves for 5 or 6 turns with multiple sections to hit the lip hard! And relatively safe so I could really go for it! While absolutely stacked on 4.7, could have easily sailed 4.2 :)
Many thanks to Noah for taking his camera out!
